Best 5 CBD Oils For Dogs with Glaucoma
Table of Contents
CBD oils for dogs with glaucoma are used to alleviate inflammation and manage pain and anxiety caused by the painful build-up of fluid and pressure in the eye. Canine glaucoma occurs when fluid is unable to drain from the eye properly and causes increased intraocular pressure (IOP). Dog eye pressure is normal when it is in the range of 20-28 mmHg (millimeters of mercury) in each eye. Dogs suffering from glaucoma have elevated pressure, and pressure above 40-50mmHg requires immediate emergency treatment.
Dogs with glaucoma experience changes in the appearance of the eye, such as a milky or opaque color, dilated or slow-moving pupils, and increased ocular discharge. Dogs with glaucoma frequently paw at their face, squint, and progressively lose vision and appetite. The pain associated with glaucoma causes the dog to become tired and anxious because of their diminished vision.
CBD contains the compound cannabidiol, a hemp-derived substance that supports dogs with pain, inflammation, and anxiety by interacting with endocannabinoid receptors that regulate the body’s inflammatory mediators to control pain and promote a feeling of well-being.
Treating glaucoma in dogs requires veterinary intervention and includes eye drops, systemic medication, beta-blockers, and diuretics to reduce fluid production and pressure and drain the fluid from the eye. Emergency glaucoma treatment requires surgery.
Dog glaucoma treatment starts with an early diagnosis and a veterinarian-designed treatment plan. CBD and glaucoma are helpful for dogs when used as a supplement to soothe the effects of the disease and the side effects of traditional treatment. CBD is not suitable as a standalone treatment for dogs with glaucoma.

How Can CBD Oil Help Dogs with Glaucoma?
CBD Oil helps dogs with glaucoma by soothing the painful clinical signs associated with the disease. The increased intraocular pressure inside the eye makes it hard for them to go about their daily lives as they are in a state of chronic discomfort.
CBD Oil reduces the discomfort by providing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. The inflammatory action of CBD revolves around the activation of endocannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. These receptors are predominantly expressed in the central nervous system and the immune system. The activation of these receptors leads to a decrease in ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) and TNF-α (Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha) levels, which reduces oxidative stress and inflammation. CBD reduces oxidative conditions by preventing the formation of superoxide radicals and reactive oxygen species that causes damage to optic nervous tissue. Triggering endocannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 promotes relaxation by having an anxiolytic and anti-stress effect on the nervous system, thus helping dogs with glaucoma.
Dog glaucoma treatment includes a long-term veterinarian-prescribed plan and drugs that drain the fluid from the eye. CBD oil is safe to use in conjunction with traditional veterinary medication provided that it has been reviewed by the dog’s veterinarian.
Every dog reacts differently to CBD. Mild sedation is the usual response in dogs as the anxiolytic and anti-inflammatory effects kick in. Dogs feel less stressed and have improved mood and behavior. A large pool of anecdotal evidence provided by dog owners reports CBD has greatly improved their dogs’ wellbeing.
How Does Glaucoma Affect Dogs?
Glaucoma affects dogs by causing extreme discomfort and pain due to increased pressure inside the eyeball. Glaucoma initially manifests as cloudiness of the cornea, enlargement of the eye, and excess discharge from the eye, with the dog spasmodically winking and or pawing at the face. When the disease is untreated, dogs with glaucoma suffer damage to the important vascular and nervous structures behind the eye. The optic nerve is damaged, and retinal cells die, leaving the dog with permanent blindness. Dogs with glaucoma exhibit behavioral changes, showing obvious signs of discomfort, and owners often note their dogs are not themselves and become more lethargic, have decreased appetite, and consistently rub their faces.
What is Dog Glaucoma?
Glaucoma in dogs or chronic ocular hypertension is a painful condition of the eye caused by an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP) resulting in optic neuropathy. The eye is constantly making fluid, known as the vitreous humor, which provides the eye with nutrients and oxygen, and retains its shape. An eye in a healthy dog is able to continuously drain vitreous humor to make room for new humor. Dogs with glaucoma cannot drain the fluid from the eye, and the vitreous humor continues to pool inside the eyeball, causing the pressure to be much greater than the normal 20-28 mmHg.
Primary glaucoma is when there is sufficient outflow but poor draining of humor, which occurs as a hereditary defect in the anatomy of the eye that affects the drainage angle. Breeds of dogs such as Akitas, Siberian Huskies, and Cocker Spaniels are more predisposed to primary glaucoma.
Secondary glaucoma is when there is insufficient outflow but adequate drainage of aqueous humor. It happens when there are underlying conditions such as uveitis (inflammation of the inner eye), cancer, pigmentary diseases, or displacement of the lens.
Glaucoma in dogs causes the cornea (the front part of the eye) to become inflamed, cloudy, and bulge. The increased pressure on the tissue at the back of the eye, the retina, and the optic nerve causes damage and leads to the loss of retinal and optic nerve cells, leading to permanent blindness.
What are Symptoms of Dog Glaucoma?
The symptoms of dog glaucoma are listed below.
- Change in Eye Appearance: The increase in pressure in the eye causes it to look red, swollen, and bloodshot when looking at the inside. Dogs with glaucoma have eyes that look opaque or hazy rather than clear and bright.
- Vision Impairment: Dogs with glaucoma start bumping into things and are reluctant to move around as their sight diminishes, causing heightened anxiety.
- Pawing at Face: Dogs with glaucoma paw at their face to relieve the pain inside their head.
- Excess eye discharge: The irritation causes the dog to dog squint and avoid being touched near the affected eye. Fluid discharge from the affected eye increases.
- Lethargy: Glaucoma dog symptoms include extreme pain, which causes a dog to be inappetent and weak as they try to deal with the pain.
How to Diagnose Dogs’ Glaucoma?
To diagnose dogs’ glaucoma, follow the steps below.
- Monitor the behavior: Observe the dog’s actions to observe whether they paw or nudge at their face or squint a lot. Take note of any episodes of not being able to react well to visual stimuli and bumping into objects on a daily basis.
- Physical examination: Take the dog to the veterinarian for a thorough physical examination. Physical trauma to the eye is assessed by inspecting the cornea for ulcerations or any physical signs of trauma
- Gonioscopy: The veterinarian performs a gonioscopy to diagnose glaucoma if the veterinarian discovers abnormally high intraocular pressure in the dog’s eye. Gonioscopy is a procedure that examines the drainage angle, which is the area at the front of the eye between the iris and cornea. The drainage angle is the angle from which the aqueous humor naturally must drain out of the eye. A beam of light from a special instrument is sent into the lens to highlight the drainage angle, and the status of the drainage angle determines the type of glaucoma present.
What are the Causes of Dogs’ Glaucoma?
The causes of dogs’ glaucoma are listed below.
- Hereditary trait. Primary glaucomas occur as a hereditary defect in the drainage angle of an otherwise healthy eye. The anatomical defect increases intraocular pressure because aqueous humor is unable to escape the eye. Breeds, including Akitas, Siberian Huskies, and Cocker Spaniels, are prone to primary glaucomas.
- Cancer of the eye. Eye tumors cause increased pressure inside the eye as they enlarge and protrude inside the affected tissue. These tumors press on the retinal and optic nerve cells and cause pain and blindness.
- Uveitis. Dogs with glaucoma experience inflammation inside of the eye, which is caused by physical trauma to the cornea (corneal ulcers), cataracts, and systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Other causes of uveitis are infections such as those in tick-borne bacterial illnesses like Babesiosis and Ehrlichiosis.
- Hyphema. A condition where blood accumulates in the anterior chamber of the eye and produces increased pressure in the eye. Hyphemas are usually a result of an underlying disease or trauma to the eye, infection, or inflammation.
- Displacement of the Lens. Lens luxation is a condition where the dog’s eye lens is completely or partially dislocated from its normal position. Lens displacement is hereditary in Terrier dogs, Australian Cattle Dogs, Border Collies, Shar-Pei, and some other dog breeds. Lens displacement results in persistent glaucoma and retinal detachment in serious cases.
- Pigmentary Diseases. This type of dog glaucoma occurs when there is an accumulation of melanin-containing cells in the aqueous outflow tracts and drainage angle. The cells block the exit of the aqueous humor, causing an increase in intraocular pressure. The condition has been described in dog breeds like Cairn Terriers.
Can CBD Treat Dogs’ Glaucoma?
No, CBD oil does not treat dogs’ glaucoma, but it soothes the clinical signs. A 2024 human study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology entitled Cannabinoids and Glaucoma, Tomida et al. gave an overview of the latest achievements in research into the potential use of cannabinoids for glaucoma. The study stated that cannabinoids effectively lower the intraocular pressure (IOP) and have neuroprotective actions. CBD works on the ECS, which is present in all mammals, further studies are required on CBD for dogs with glaucoma.
CBD oil given to dogs with other chronic inflammatory conditions such as atopic dermatitis, arthritis, and idiopathic seizures has seen positive results in managing clinical signs.
CBD is safe to use as a supplementary aid for dogs with glaucoma while undergoing traditional veterinary treatment. Stop CBD administration in the unlikely event the dog reacts poorly to the CBD.
Is CBD Oil Safe for Dogs?
Yes. CBD is safe for dogs. Choose high-quality CBD oil and consult a veterinarian about the most appropriate dosage for dogs with glaucoma.
Studies in humans have shown that CBD is able to elevate liver enzymes such as AST aspartate aminotransferase, which is a protein made by liver enzymes, and inactivate cytochrome P450 3A and P450 2C, which are enzymes needed for hepatic metabolism that are needed to biotransform certain drugs into their active form. These interactions must be considered when co-administering CBD with other medications.
The answer is ‘yes’ for animal owners wondering if CBD is safe for animals? Pet owners deciding on a pet CBD product are able to access data on the best product through the Certificate of Analysis, researching the brand and consulting a veterinarian.
