Table of Contents
Pet health products, which are geared toward dogs, cats, and other domestic pets, aren’t anything new. According to the American Pet Products Association, in 2021 alone, pet owners spent over $123 billion dollars on their animals, including within categories featuring vitamins and other health supplements.
Casually browsing through Amazon’s pet categories will uncover unique supplements such as fish oil treats for healthy skin, mushroom powder for immune support, bone broth for joint health, pumpkin puree for better bowel movements, and even hemp chews for anxiety.
It goes without saying: people love their pets. But where in the U.S. do pet owners spend the most on health supplements?
We teamed up with Honest Paws, one of the leading manufacturers of premium health products for pets, to take a deep dive into this question.
What States Spend the Most on Health Products for their Pets?
To answer this question, we took a look at Honest Paws’ 2021 sales data to uncover the top 15 states where pet owners spent the most on pet health products for their dogs and/or cats.
We honed in on the company’s most popular products: their probiotics (used for healthy digestion), their turkey tail mushroom powder (used to support the immune system), their Green Lipped Mussel powder (used for mobility support), and their hemp products (most commonly used for pain relief, joint support, immune support, and calming).
We looked at both sales overall in each state, as well as sales per 100,000 people. See the data below.
Here are the Top 15 states where pet owners spent the most money overall on the most popular Honest Paws products in 2021:
California comes out on top in this lineup. In The Golden State, sales of Honest Paws’ most popular products are 685% higher than the national average across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In fact, the closest competition–Texas–doesn’t even see half the annual sales that California does.
That said, Texas, Florida, and New York still pack a punch when it comes to big spenders. Sales in these states are 245%, 230%, and 194% higher than the national average respectively.
Here are the Top 15 states where pet owners spent the most money per 100,000 people on the most popular Honest Paws products in 2021:
States like Colorado, California, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Washington, and Arizona still make the lineup under these new terms, but Wyoming, which boasts a population of less than a million, leads the pack in this Top 15 list.
In fact, sales in Wyoming are 89% greater than the national average per 100,000 people across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Other low-population states such as Delaware, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island also see high placements. Sales in these states are 84%, 83%, and 37% higher than the national average respectively.
The Future of Pet Health Products
According to the American Pet Products Association, the U.S. pet industry has continued to grow steadily over the years. In fact, from 2020 to 2021 alone, total expenditures grew by nearly 20%. One reason for this steady growth comes from the increasing number of U.S. households adopting pets. In 1988, only 56% of American households owned a pet. Today, that number has come to be 70%. And considering the amazing health benefits that pets provide, along with their unconditional love and companionship, it’s no surprise that pet owners are willing to go the extra mile in making sure their companion animals are happy, healthy, and comfortable.
