CBD for dogs is a natural supplement extracted from hemp. Ongoing research suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) is safe for dogs when used correctly and under supervision.

Cannabidiol interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), supporting health and balance. CBD can help reduce pain, inflammation, and anxiety, while controlling seizures and boosting the immune system.

CBD oil for pets and other CBD supplements, such as treats, capsules, or creams, can be used to treat various conditions, including arthritis, allergies, anxiety, hyperactivity, cancer, lymphoma, and glaucoma.

The recommended dosage of CBD oil for dogs is between 1 and 5 mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight. You can use CBD for dog health daily or as needed based on the underlying issue you are managing.

Always choose high-quality dog CBD supplements. Read the Certificates of Analysis (COAs) and reviews of CBD oil for dogs before selecting a product.

What Is CBD for Dogs?

CBD (cannabidiol) for dogs is a natural compound from the hemp strain of the Cannabis sativa plant, which is used to yield health benefits in dogs.

Hemp-sourced CBD is non-psychoactive, non-toxic, and health-boosting. It can help with many conditions, such as arthritis, seizures, glaucoma, and cancer. CBD works naturally, and dogs cannot overdose on hemp supplements.

While side effects of CBD are possible, they are minor and usually associated with incorrect use and low-quality or impure CBD products.

Bottom line, research on CBD use in dogs is still in its early stages of development. Numerous studies have confirmed its therapeutic effects and safety. However, it has not yet been approved by the FDA.

Therefore, federal laws prevent veterinarians from prescribing CBD. The good news is that just because veterinarians cannot recommend CBD does not mean they cannot discuss it.

If you are interested in using CBD for your dog’s condition, consider consulting a holistic veterinarian or a veterinarian who is willing to discuss CBD products. That way, you can make an informed decision on whether to use CBD, and a veterinary professional will supervise the use if you decide to give it a try.

Is CBD Safe for Dogs?

Yes, CBD is safe for dogs. Hemp-derived, high-quality CBD products, specifically formulated for animals, are safe for dogs when used as directed.

“CBD administration to dogs is generally safe and well tolerated for short-term use,” explains a research study, “CBD for Pets: Navigating Quality Assurance, Safety Standards, and Marketing Strategies,” published in the BMC Journal of Cannabis Research in 2025.

Similar conclusions regarding the CBD’s safety for dogs were previously made by other studies, including a 2019 study, “Single-Dose Pharmacokinetics and Preliminary Safety Assessment with Use of CBD-Rich Hemp Nutraceutical in Healthy Dogs and Cats”, and the 2018 paper from Colorado State University titled “A Report of Adverse Effects Associated With the Administration of Cannabidiol in Healthy Dogs.”

Another study, “Long-Term Daily Feeding of Cannabidiol is Well-Tolerated by Healthy Dogs,” published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science in 2022, found that long-term CBD use is also safe.

Long-term CBD use in dogs, however, requires veterinary guidance and monitoring. CBD affects the liver and interacts with other medications. It can also cause minor side effects, at times.

Dry mouth, low blood pressure, and increased sleepiness are all possible side effects of CBD oil for animals. Side effects are more likely if the dog is given a higher-than-necessary dose or the CBD supplement is introduced abruptly.

Always purchase high-quality CBD products specifically formulated for dogs and use the correct doses to minimize the risk of side effects and ensure maximum CBD safety and efficacy.

Do Vets Recommend CBD for Dogs?

The regulatory landscape surrounding CBD for dogs is complex and nuanced. The use of CBD for animals is not prohibited in most states; however, veterinarians may be prevented from making CBD recommendations in some states, depending on the specific regulations.

Veterinarians are not legally allowed to recommend, prescribe, or dispense CBD supplements for dogs. Plus, some vets can be reluctant to suggest CBD due to the lack of scientific evidence about its safety and efficacy.

If you believe your dog’s condition could benefit from CBD, research “veterinarians near me” who specialize in holistic treatments or are comfortable discussing CBD to gather all necessary information.

The American Veterinary Medical Association encourages veterinarians to respond to clients’ questions regarding potential treatment options, including both FDA-approved and off-label medications and supplements.

How does CBD for Dogs Work?

CBD for dogs works via the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a regulatory system in mammals responsible for managing vital body functions, including sleep, appetite, metabolism, mood, immunity, pain, and inflammation.

The ECS has three components: endocannabinoids, endocannabinoid receptors, and enzymes. CBD replaces the body’s endocannabinoids and binds with the endocannabinoid receptors.

The bound CBD-receptor complex regulates body functions. Once the function is controlled, the enzymes break down the complex.

Therefore, CBD for dogs works naturally. It supports normal body function and balance naturally, through the dog’s endocannabinoid system.

Is It Okay to Give Dogs CBD Daily?

Yes, it is okay to give dogs CBD daily. CBD can be used daily or as needed, depending on the specific condition being treated.

Daily use is recommended for chronic conditions, such as arthritis, seizures, and cancer. CBD can be given on an as-needed basis for anxiety, when anticipating stressful events, like thunder or fireworks.

Consistent CBD use allows its compounds to accumulate in the dog’s body, making them more effective in interacting with the endocannabinoid system and yielding health benefits.

What Are the Benefits of CBD for Dogs?

The benefits of CBD for dogs include improved health, therapeutic effects in the treatment of specific conditions, a natural mechanism of action, and a low risk of side effects.

CBD for dogs modulates the immune system, which impacts overall health. Cannabidiol has potent anti-inflammatory properties. It also reduces pain, especially osteoarthritic and neuropathic pain.

CBD helps control seizures, relieves anxiety, and calms hyperactive episodes. Combined with traditional cancer treatments, it boosts their efficacy and acts as an anti-cancer agent. CBD for dogs helps soothe nausea and promote appetite.

Cannabinoids work naturally through the endocannabinoid system. It rarely causes side effects, and even if they occur, they are mild and typically resolve on their own.

Pet CBD extracted from hemp does not have THC and therefore, cannot make dogs high. In the worst-case scenario, if a dog takes too much CBD, it will become sleepy and snooze through the effects.

What Health Problems Can CBD Help Dogs With?

The health problems CBD can help dogs with are arthritis, allergies, cancer, seizures, and anxiety.

CBD Oil for Dog Arthritis

Canine osteoarthritis (OA) is a widespread issue, affecting 25% of adult and over 80% of senior dogs. CBD for arthritis reduces pain and inflammation.

“CBD is considered safe for treating canine OA,” and it “may reduce pain scores,” says a study “Efficacy and Safety of Cannabidiol for the Treatment of Canine Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Animal Intervention Studies,” published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science in 2023.

Arthritic dogs supplemented with CBD show increased mobility and need lower NSAID doses to achieve pain relief.

The efficacy of CBD oil for dog arthritis was demonstrated in a 2018 study by Cornell University, which found that its use resulted in significant improvement and a marked increase in activity levels.

CBD can be part of a comprehensive treatment plan for dog osteoarthritis, which also includes weight management, other supplements, and low-impact exercise, explains the Canine Arthritis Resources and Education

CBD Oil for Dog Allergies

Allergies in dogs are another increasingly common problem. Between 10 and 50% of all dogs experience allergies at least once in their lifetime.

CBD helps dogs with allergies on several levels. First, it modulates the immune system, which is a primary cause of allergies. Then, it reduces inflammation, a common symptom of allergies. Finally, CBD helps soothe allergy symptoms, primarily by alleviating itchiness.

CBD is “effective in controlling pruritic behavior in dogs,” says a study, “Effects of Cannabidiol without Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol on Canine Atopic Dermatitis,” published in the Canadian Veterinary Journal in 2023.

Similar results were previously reported in an Ellevet Sciences study. In the study, 65% of the allergic dogs supplemented with CBD showed a decrease in itching and chewing of at least 50%.

CBD oil for dog allergies can be used orally or topically. Oral CBDs work from the inside, and CBD-infused creams are highly efficient in soothing irritated skin.

CBD Oil for Dog Cancer

One in three dogs develops some form of cancer at some point in their lives. It is a devastating diagnosis, requiring multimodal treatment. CBD is a standard part of the treatment.

CBD for dog cancer works both directly and indirectly. The CBD’s direct effect comes from its anti-cancer properties.

A study conducted by the AKC Canine Health Foundation showed that cancer cells exposed to CBD reproduce at a significantly reduced rate. The effect was observed in cancer cells of three types: osteosarcoma, mammary carcinoma, and lymphoma.

CBD is also shown to cause cancer cell apoptosis (programmed cell death) and a decrease in the growth and spread (metastasis) of certain tumors.

The indirect effect is associated with traditional cancer treatments. Combined with vincristine (a popular chemotherapeutic), CBD has synergistic effects, according to a study, “The Effect of Cannabidiol on Canine Neoplastic Cell Proliferation and Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase Activation During Autophagy and Apoptosis,” published in Veterinary and Comparative Oncology in 2021.

CBD oil for dog cancer can also help manage the side effects of traditional cancer treatments. For example, CBD soothes nausea, reduces vomiting, and improves appetite.

CBD Oil for Dog Seizures

Seizures are the most common neurologic disorder in dogs. CBD for dog seizures is a novel and promising option, especially for treatment-resistant epileptic dogs.

In a groundbreaking 2018 study from Colorado State University, CBD was found helpful for seizure management in as many as 89% of the cases

The AKC Canine Health Foundation is currently funding studies to back up these results. One of those studies showed that “while taking CBD oil, dogs experienced fewer days in which they had a seizure compared to the period during which they took placebo oil.”

CBD can reduce the frequency, severity, and duration of seizure episodes in dogs. “Cannabidiol decreased total seizures and seizure days,” as said in “The Efficacy and Safety of Cannabidiol as Adjunct Treatment for Drug-Resistant Idiopathic Epilepsy in 51 Dogs: A Double-Blinded Crossover Study,” published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2023.

CBD oil for dog seizures is used in combination with traditional anti-seizure medications, not as their replacement.

CBD Oil for Anxiety in Dogs

Modern dogs are increasingly anxious, exhibiting both situational and behavioral stress. CBD can help nervous dogs feel calmer and happier.

CBD reduces anxiety by changing the way the dog’s brain responds to serotonin (the so-called feel-good hormone). It also lowers cortisol levels (which is the primary stress-inducing hormone).

In a study at Cornell University, dogs were given CBD chews before a stressful event. The results demonstrated that 83% of the dogs exhibited a decrease in stress- or anxiety-related behaviors.

Supplementation with CBD reduces anxious behaviors such as whining and lip licking and leads to a calmer emotional state.

Dogs given CBD before car rides are less anxious and more comfortable during the journey, says a study, “Daily Dosing of Cannabidiol (CBD) Demonstrates a Positive Effect on Measures of Stress in Dogs During Repeated Exposure to Car Travel,” published in the Journal of Animal Science in 2024.

CBD oil for dog anxiety can be used daily for behavioral or on an as-needed basis for situational stress. It can also be combined with standard anxiolytic medications.

CBD Oil for Dog Hyperactivity

True hyperactivity in dogs is rare, but many dogs show types of negative hyper behaviors, such as short attention span, impulsiveness, and excessive energy.

Lack of stimulation (physical and mental), high-carb diet, and anxiety are considered to be the primary triggers of hyperactivity.

CBD for dogs can help reduce hyperactivity by managing anxiety. Cannabidiol supports a calm demeanor by managing brain chemicals, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin.

A study conducted in a dog shelter in Italy included dogs with Hypersensitivity-Hyperactivity Syndrome (HSHA) who showed behaviors such as compulsive wandering, spinning, and limb licking, resulting in skin lesions. Following CBD supplementation, dogs with HSHA exhibited reduced aggressiveness and discomfort, as well as increased curiosity and positive social behaviors.

“CBD can help address some triggers that cause hyperactive behavior,” according to Dogster. However, the site continues to explain, saying, “but it isn’t a cure.”

CBD oil for dog hyperactivity must be used as part of a multimodal treatment plan that includes exercise, training, and a balanced diet.

CBD Oil for Dog Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a painful eye condition that can lead to vision deficits and blindness. Generally, it is not prevalent in dogs. Still, certain breeds, such as Basset Hounds, American Cocker Spaniels, and Chow Chows, are predisposed to this condition.

The use of CBD for ophthalmic diseases is of great interest, “due to its anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects,” reports a study, “Growing Interest but Limited Evidence on the Usefulness of Cannabidiol in Treating Ophthalmic Disease in Dogs: A Review,” published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 2024.

Glaucoma is associated with increased release of glutamate (neurotransmitter), which causes the neural cells in the eye to die. CBD has been shown to protect cells from glutamate-induced cell death.

A study published in 2016 in the Journal of Applied Biomedicine showed that “cannabinoid-containing eyedrops reduced the intraocular pressure in healthy dogs,” hence exhibiting a “potential for the treatment of glaucoma in dogs.”

The use of CBD oil for dog glaucoma requires more extensive research. However, the findings are promising so far..

CBD Oil for Dog Lymphoma

Lymphoma, a type of cancer affecting the white blood cells, is diagnosed in approximately one in 15 dogs. It is very aggressive and requires multimodal, rapid treatment.

CBD exhibits various anti-cancer properties, helpful for dogs with lymphoma. The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) found that “cannabinoids have an anti-proliferative and apoptotic effect on canine lymphoma cells.”

In simple terms, CBD effectively stops canine lymphoma cells from reproducing and spreading, while provoking their death. Research funded by the AKC Canine Health Foundation reports similar findings.

CBD oil for dog lymphoma is safe to combine with other cancer treatments. “CBD/CBDA‐rich hemp supplementation appeared safe and well‐tolerated in dogs undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma,” according to a study, “Safety, Efficacy and Doxorubicin Pharmacokinetics During Cannabidiol/Cannabidiolic Acid Rich Hemp Oil Use in Dogs With Lymphoma Undergoing CHOP Chemotherapy,” published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2025.

Some dogs with lymphoma are in pain or discomfort, depending on the cancer type. CBD can help reduce them, making the dog more comfortable.

How Much CBD Oil Should I Give My Dog?

You should give your dog between 1 and 5 milligrams of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight a day. The recommended dosage of CBD for dogs varies depending on several factors, including weight, overall health, age, underlying health conditions, CBD quality, and delivery method.

Always start with a lower CBD dose, such as 1-2 mg of CBD per 10 pounds, and then gradually increase the amount. Slow CBD introduction gives the body time to adjust, effectively reducing the risk of side effects.

Dogs cannot overdose on hemp-derived CBD products. However, CBD displays bell-shaped dose-response curves, meaning excess CBD doses have less or no effect compared to the optimal dose.

Therefore, you must give the correct CBD amount. If you are unsure about the optimal CBD dose, consult with a veterinarian to confirm the correct mg of CBD your dog needs.

What Potency of CBD Oil Should I Give My Dog?

You should give your dog the potency of CBD oil best suited for its size. Potency refers to the amount of CBD in milligrams per milliliter of oil. Simply said, it indicates the amount of CBD in the product.

Small dogs need CBD oils with lower potencies for easy dosing. Large dogs, on the other hand, require CBD products with higher potencies. When using a high-potency CBD oil, you can use a smaller amount of the product to achieve the desired therapeutic effect.

High-potency CBD is ideal for large and giant breeds, as they require a higher dose of CBD, and this option offers a better cost-to-efficacy ratio.

How Can I Give CBD to My Dog?

You can give CBD to your dog sublingually, in the form of treats, or topically, depending on the need and practicality.

CBD tinctures or oils are designed for oral use. It is best to give them sublingually, or beneath the tongue, to ensure fast absorption and efficacy. CBD oils can also be mixed with the dog’s food, but that will result in slower absorption. Using CBD oil allows precise dosing.

CBD-infused treats and soft chews are also designed for oral use. They are very easy to give as they are dog-friendly flavored, but are less precise in terms of dosing. CBD capsules are a good alternative to treats and soft-chews.

CBD creams are formulated for external or topical use. Topical CBD products are given to dogs for skin problems, such as itchiness and irritation.

How Do I Choose CBD for My Dog?

Select CBD for your dog based on several key criteria, including third-party lab testing, sourcing and extraction methods, organic ingredients, and the type of extract used.

Good CBD brands have their products independently tested by labs to verify label accuracy and safety. The test results are reported in a document called Certificate of Analysis (COA).

Pet CBD must be sourced from hemp and not marijuana. Marijuana has tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is toxic to pets. Hemp contains a non-dangerous amount of less than 0.3% THC. The extraction method matters, too. Supercritical CO2 extraction is preferred as it ensures maximum product quality and purity.

The best CBD for dogs is extracted from organic hemp, free from pesticides and contaminants. The carrier oil and other ingredients should also be organic.

Finally, pay attention to the type of extract. CBD is extractable from specific parts of the hemp plant or the whole plant. The chemical composition of the final product depends on which plant parts were used.

For example, hemp seed oil, made from hemp seeds, lacks cannabinoids. CBD isolates have only one cannabinoid, and broad-spectrum CBD has several.

Full-spectrum CBD is best because it has a versatile cannabinoid profile, as well as terpenes, flavonoids, and omega fatty acids. The additional compounds have an entourage effect, which means they boost the potency of the cannabinoids.

Avoid CBD brands that are vague in their descriptions or advertise exaggerated claims. CBD is not a cure on its own, but it is helpful when combined with other treatment options.
